Frequently Asked Questions: Q: If you have been injured, or a loved one has been killed, how do you choose a lawyer to investigate whether you have a case among the thousands of lawyers licensed to practice law in West Virginia? A: The American Bar Association, the largest lawyer organization in the United States, approves and accredits national board certification of lawyers in Civil Trial Advocacy (injury law) offered by the National Board of Legal Specialty Certification (NBLSC) and board certification of lawyers in Medical Malpractice Liability offered by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys (ABPLA). Q: How do qualified and accredited lawyers become eligible for national board certification? A: In order for a lawyer to become board certified by the NBLSC or ABPLA, both organizations require proof that the attorney is in good standing, is substantially involved in litigating and trying cases (including minimum trial day requirements), has met continuing legal education requirements, and has been subjected to peer review by persons against whom they’ve tried cases and judges before whom they’ve appeared. Both organizations require passing a written examination. NBTA, in addition, requires a trial court memorandum and an annual disclosure of misconduct to monitor quality, as well as a continuation of substantial involvement in civil trial practice. Q: How many attorneys in the state of West Virginia have national board certification? A: William Druckman, who has been a Trial Lawyer since 1981, is the only lawyer in West Virginia to be board certified by the ABPLA in Medical Malpractice Liability. Mr. Druckman is one of eleven lawyers in West Virginia to be board certified by the NBLSC as a Civil Trial Advocate. He is the only lawyer in West Virginia with double board certification. In addition, Mr. Druckman has been named a West Virginia Super Lawyer and has been listed as one of its Top 100 Lawyers in West Virginia by the American Trial Lawyers Association.
